McLaughlin Middle School was named after Henry J. McLaughlin, Jr., who was born in Manchester, New Hampshire on August 7, 1923. Mr. McLaughlin graduated from Central High School in 1941. He continued his education at St. Anselm College, Boston University and Notre Dame College. He received his doctorate degree in 1985. Mr. McLaughlin started his teaching career in Belmont, New Hampshire in 1947 until 1950 when he returned to teach in his home town of Manchester. He taught at Brown School, coached at Central and West High Schools, became a principal in 1954 and was named Assistant Superintendent of Schools in 1963. He served as Superintendent of Schools in Manchester from 1970 until 1985 when he retired. He died in the spring of 1997. Having devoted most of his educational career to Manchester, it was decided to name the new middle school in his memory.

McLaughlin Middle School was the first middle school in the City of Manchester. We have over 850 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. The educational programs at McLaughlin are student-centered, team-oriented, and provide a hands-on/experimental approach. Students are instructed in the core academics of Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, and Science. In addition, the Allied Arts provides students with exposure to Computers, Technical Education, Physical Education, Family and Consumer Science, Music, Art, and World Languages. Students also have opportunities to participate in co-curricular activities and athletics.

McLaughlin Middle School is a school that understands the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional needs of pre and early adolescents, cares for them and prepares them for academic success. These future citizens are the life blood, hope and future of this city, the nation, and the world. We also affirm that the process of education is a partnership between students, education, parents, and the community and is based on mutual respect and cooperation.

The school recognizes the individual abilities, differences, and interest of students and attempts to provide ways for them to understand themselves; to develop self-discipline, self-confidence, and a good self image; to develop their entire person to the epitome of their abilities, ever striving to achieve high standards and worthy goals.
